This is the photograph that inspired my “Earth Magic” series.  I’d been working with the wet plate collodion process for the second year in a row, trying to find out how to make it “mine.”  It’s such a distinctive process that it’s very easy to just let it take over.  I wanted to do something different with it.
I took this photograph, then went home and thought about it.  It wasn’t amazing, but I felt a very strong potential.  That night the word “witchy” came to mind.  I pulled the books about witchcraft off of my shelf.  I went to the library.  I made plans to photograph the same friend again the next week.
This image doesn’t exist any longer.  It was too thin to make prints from.  It was very hard to even get this image to show up.  I became desperate one day and cleaned it so that I could use the plate to make a new photograph.  As a self-admitted archivist (aka packrat), this is something I almost never do.  I regret it now, if just for its relevance to the trajectory that it sent me on.

Hi everyone!
I haven’t been posting much new artwork because I’ve been busy.  What have I been doing?  Well…
I got married on August 12th!  Jane and I then went on a honeymoon to Vienna, where we stayed for 10 days.  It was amazing.  Above is a fan photo of myself next to a Sethian altar from 19th Dynasty Egypt.
Almost as soon as we got back into the country, we put the finishing touches on our new website, Occult Guide.  It’s an interactive social media site centered around mapping user-submitted locations of occult interest.  So if that kind of thing sound interesting to you, please join in!
Now comes the time for cleaning out the studio, putting some things in order and starting some new projects.  I hope to be able to share more soon.  Thanks for following here, everyone!
